Class Descriptions

Assisting & Adjusting
Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in the ASP teacher training program.
Learn how to safely assist and adjust students. We will explore a variety of poses which present special challenges to students and find creative solutions to assist their entry into and out of the poses. Study the most frequently applied non-force adjustments and learn how to tailor them to fit your body mechanics. Expert assisting and adjusting fosters a deeper learning opportunity for your students. We will become familiar with the process and move towards confidence and mastery.

Sequencing
Learn how to progress from one pose to the next. Study the art of organizing your poses to access challenging poses and to provide continuity of themes when working. Learn how to put together rewarding home practice sequences. Study the relationships between poses to generate safe, coherent lesson plans for your students. Barbara and Todd each present their own experienced understanding of the sequencing process.

Teaching Practice Class
Prerequisite: Sequencing class and must be enrolled in the ASP teacher training program
The Teaching Practice Class will offer students an opportunity to practice teaching to a class of their peers. Each class a student will make a presentation from a pre-assigned theme and then receive feedback from their classmates. This is your time to refine your skills in sequencing, verbal communication, time management, student management, hands-on adjustments and more.

Yamas & Niyamas
This series of classes will help us develop our understanding of yama (values) and niyamas (observances) as they relate to yoga practice and teaching. In addition to class discussion and presentation, students will complete reading and writing assignments. Particular emphasis will be placed upon practical application of the yamas & niyamas in yoga practice and teaching.

BKS Iyengar
We'll read Tree of Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar, supplemented with videos of Mr. Iyengar, to gain a greater understanding of Iyengar and his influence on current yoga practices. Students within the ASP teacher training program will have written assignments. Others outside of the program are welcome and encouraged to attend also, though homework will not be required. Come and gain a greater appreciation of Mr. Iyengar's way of working in and influence of the world of yoga.
