At Portland Yoga Arts, we offer an Advanced Studies Program(ASP) for intermediate students and yoga teachers who want to deepen their experience of yoga. You can study within the Advanced Studies Program in two ways. As a general student, you can register for and attend any class in the ASP which you find interesting. As an enrolee in the yoga teacher training option, you can proceed through the three year program, preparing yourself for a career in yoga instruction.
The Advanced Studies Program requires three years to complete, for those enrolled in the teacher training option. There are over 800 classroom hours in the curriculum. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm & 7:15pm. Some required classes occur on select weekends throughout the program.
Those who enroll in the teacher training option must also meet other requirements. For all three years, they must maintain a homepractice of one hour per day in addition to attending a weekly yoga class. Teacher trainees will also attend a monthly peer-led study group and maintain a transcript of completed course requirements. In the final year of the teacher training option, students will also assist an approved yoga instructor for 3 terms and teach a supervised class for 3 terms.
Additionally, those in the teacher training process must attend at least 4 elective weekend-workshops offered at PYA. Sample elective courses include "Teaching Teenagers," "Yoga for Menopause," "Core Strength," "Prenatal Yoga," "Yoga Ropes," "Yoga for Healthy Knees," among others.
